With food benefits set to run out Saturday for some 1.1 million Massachusetts residents, many Boston-area residents will likely turn to food pantries and soup kitchens for assistance. “There might be a lot of people who are looking for emergency food assistance who haven’t before,” a spokesperson for the Greater Boston Food Bank said in a phone interview Wednesday. In a statement, the organization emphasized there was “no way” food pantries alone can provide enough food to replace what people stand to lose in SNAP cuts. To cover the gap, food banks in Massachusetts would have to provide “up to 56 million more meals in November alone.” Nevertheless, food bank officials said they will do “everything we can” to provide meals for people “in this time of great need,” the statement said.
