The big red charity vending machines will be in more locations in more cities around the world for the ninth straight year. (See full list below.) The Giving Machines, part of the Light the World initiative meant to help people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ by serving others, allows donors to purchase chickens, sports equipment, hygiene products and more for those in need. The machines are going to South America for the first time this year, reaching 126 cities in 21 countries for the next six weeks, leaders announced Wednesday at a news conference hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since 2017, people have donated nearly $50 million through the Giving Machine initiative. Giving Machine kiosks will reach nine new countries this year: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Italy, Japan, Spain and Thailand. In 2024, donations provided 2 million meals, vaccinated 500,000 children against polio and the measles, and provided emergency food boxes to 125,000 refugees.
