Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has been criticised for his social media post leading up to the World Cup qualifier fixture against Gabon. As Pulse Sports reported, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi shared a video on social media showing the view from his hotel room, where the national team is camped. The clip showed the unflattering conditions in the surroundings of the hotel they were lodged in, sparking reactions. While most of the reactions have been targeted at the NFF, as many see the incident as the latest in a trend of incompetence, others believe Iwobi was wrong to trigger controversy ahead of crucial fixtures. What was said The Super Eagles contingent are currently camped in Morocco, as they prepare to face Gabon on Thursday for their first CAF World Cup playoffs match. Victory in that game will qualify them to play either Cameroon or DR Congo on Sunday. Earlier today, Iwobi shared the aforementioned video from the team's hotel, and the likes of OJB took to social media to question the effect of such a post. “With over 85 caps for Nigeria and arguably the most experienced player in the squad, Iwobi should know better. Posting videos like that before such important games is poor judgement,” the Paris-based journalist argued. Another journalist, Oga Nla Media, reshared a video in which Sunday Oliseh criticised the misuse of social media by Super Eagles players in camp, adding that NFF needed to lay down the law. “The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should introduce a Code of Conduct for the Super Eagles players and all the national teams,” he said. “That childish video from Iwobi created unnecessary drama. I hope the players are restricted from social media posting until the job is done,” a netizen said. “Iwobi should be fined for that childish video. Was he trying to demarket Rabat?” another added. Another commenter referenced Oliseh’s sentiments, saying, “This was why Sunday Oliseh said the discipline in the team is not strong enough. On your first day in camp and countdown to a major match, you're posting room videos. That was bullsh#t from Iwobi and he didn't come out to debunk or explain.” Reaction from NFF and Iwobi The national team media officer has come out to clear the air, in a statement that read, “The Super Eagles are camped at Rive Hotel. What trended earlier was the view of an old building that can be seen from a window. Rive was chosen because of its proximity to the team’s training facility and the stadium here in Rabat.” As Pulse Sports reported, Iwobi has also shared a subsequent video, in which he dismissed the notion that he was protesting the quality of the hotel. He said the video has been misconstrued and that he was comfortable.
