Where Portland ranks on list of Best Sports Cities for 2025

Anyone who has stood with the Timbers Army or Rose City Riveters at Providence Park or risen to their feet during a Trail Blazers playoff game at Moda Center knows that sports fandom runs deep in Portland. But when it comes to the best sports cities in the U.S., Portland just doesn’t compare with the top contenders. That’s according to the personal finance website WalletHub, which on Wednesday released its Best Sports Cities rankings for 2025. Boston topped the overall rankings, followed by Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New York and Dallas. Ranking sixth through 10th were Philadelphia; San Francisco; Kansas City, Missouri; Washington, D.C.; and Miami. Portland landed at No. 43, which is respectable considering that the Rose City has major league teams in just two of the top five U.S. sports: football, baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey. For soccer Portland ranked No. 5, behind only Los Angeles; Orlando, Florida; Seattle; and Salt Lake City. Rip City ranked 17th for basketball, behind a top five of Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia. Rounding out the top 10 were Miami, New York, Cleveland, Houston and Oklahoma City. WalletHub said it compared 399 cities across more than 50 metrics to arrive at its rankings.
