The President of Germany, HE Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has openly expressed an interest in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He described the interest as ‘big’ during an interaction at the university on November 4, 2025, during a visit. “We are aware of opportunities in this cooperation. We have a big interest. We are learning from you and you are learning for us and for the benefit of each other.” Welcoming him, the Chairman of the University’s Governing Board, Akyamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, called for enhanced partnership and additional collaboration between the country and the institution. He touted the university, “You are in the right place. You cannot get any university better than KNUST.” Currently the university has collaborations with over 25 German institutions. For her part, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson, outlined viable areas for potential cooperation. She suggested a sustainable, end-to-end vaccine development, manufacturing and deployment pipeline for regional health security for West Africa by enabling local production of 60% of the continent’s vaccine needs by 2040. She further suggested a Smart energy campus and technical and financial assistance from the German government to establish a 2 MW smart solar energy park (2-SSEP) at KNUST to support renewable energy supply and net-zero agenda, as well as provide avenue to use the park for training and education of graduates. In response, the President committed to advancing cooperation in the coming years. “There is an existing cooperation in all the disciplines you mentioned and we will extend it in the coming years.” President Steinmeier also interacted with some alumni of the institution who visited to the European country to gain advanced knowledge in selected programmes of study.
