To some breaking news now, and fresh from hitting pause indefinitely on the planned redevelopment of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, the state government has announced it will buy the St John of God hospital in Mount Lawley to address pressure on the state’s health system. WA Premier Roger Cook is currently holding a press conference announcing the health investment, which also includes more money for Peel Health Campus, but ABC Radio Perth reported the government’s move to buy St John of God this morning. In a statement confirming the negotiations, St John of God Health Care Group chief executive Bryan Pyne said the company had seen a reduction in demands for private hospital services in the Mt Lawley area, and was also responding to rapid population growth in the city’s eastern corridor. “The proposed transfer of Mt Lawley Hospital to the State would ensure the ongoing provision of essential public health services to the community, while allowing St John of God Health Care to focus on addressing the increasing private health care needs across Perth’s growing population including in the eastern suburbs,” Pyne said. “We also anticipate expanding our flagship St John of God Subiaco Hospital following the almost completed stage 2 development and upgrade happening there.” We’ll bring you more on this story as it develops today.
