Vincent Kompany's breaks long-standing Bayern Munich tradition as Man City legend signs new contract with the German giants

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has penned a new contract at the club - breaking a long-standing tradition of sorts with the German giants. The former Manchester City captain was appointed as manager of the club at the start of last season, taking over from Thomas Tuchel despite just relegating Burnley from the Premier League. In his first season in charge, he led the club to Bundesliga success, while they also lifted the German Super Cup at the start of the season. And Kompany has become the first manager at Bayern to sign a contract extension since 2010 - which was when Louis van Gaal extended his stay before departing in April 2011. Since van Gaal left, Bayern have had nine permanent managers, including Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. None of them, though, did enough to pick up an extension, with the longest reign lasting just short of three years - which was Guardiola between July 2013 and June 2016. Kompany's old deal was due to expire at the end of next season, but his new one runs until 2029. Van Gaal, meanwhile, who extended his deal in 2010, was the first Bayern manager to do so since Ottmar Hitzfeld in 2003, suggesting it is a serious rarity that Bayern opt to make the call. Kompany said upon signing the deal: 'I'm grateful, honoured and would like to thank FC Bayern for the trust and the working environment they've given me from day one. 'It feels like I've been here a lot longer and that I know the club well. It's been a great experience so far. We've started on a wonderful journey. Let's keep working hard and celebrate much more success.' Max Ederl added: 'm delighted about this extension. When we appointed Vinny, we had a clear vision of our shared path and he quickly proved that he would help FC Bayern move forward – both on and off the pitch. 'He's a role model who unites players, fans and everyone at the club, and we want to build something long-term with him.' This season, the German champions are top of the Bundesliga table by five points, having won all seven of their matches so far.
