Efforts are underway to transform Vijayawada into a major sports hub, said MP Kesineni Sivanath, announcing that the city’s indoor stadiums will be fully operational by December to host upcoming shuttle badminton tournaments. A review meeting was held on Tuesday at the Command Control Room of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) headquarters to discuss the modernisation works being carried out at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, Vidyadharapuram Stadium, and Makineni Basava Punnaiah Stadium. The upgrades are aimed at enabling Vijayawada to host national and international-level sports competitions. During the meeting, officials reviewed renovation plans, installation of modern facilities, expansion of athlete amenities, and initiatives to promote local sports activities. They agreed that all departments would work in coordination to develop Vijayawada into a leading sports centre in the State, ensuring better infrastructure for both residents and athletes. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sivanath said all sports grounds in the city were being upgraded to meet national and international standards. He added that hosting such high-level tournaments would not only boost the sporting ecosystem but also strengthen the city’s economy. VMC Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M., Additional Commissioner (Projects) D. Chandrasekhar, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh Chairman A. Ravi Naidu and others were present.
