Veteran actor Sanjay Khan’s wife Zarine Khan passes away at 81 in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Veteran actor Sanjay Khan’s wife and interior designer Zarine Khan passed away on Friday morning at the age of 81 due to age-related ailments. The Bollywood fraternity gathered at her Mumbai residence to pay their final respects and extend support to her grieving family — husband Sanjay Khan, son Zayed Khan, and daughters Sussanne Khan, Simone Arora, and Farah Ali Khan. Bollywood stars pay their last respects Several celebrities from the film industry were spotted arriving at the Khan residence soon after the news broke. Jaya Bachchan and her daughter Shweta Bachchan were among the first to arrive to offer condolences. Actors Bobby Deol, Rani Mukerji, Saba Azad, and Pashmina Roshan, Hrithik Roshan’s sister, were also seen at the residence. Hrithik Roshan, Sussanne Khan’s former husband, looked visibly emotional as he left the premises after spending time with the family. His gesture of solidarity with Sussanne during the difficult time was widely appreciated by fans and the media. Actor Jackie Shroff, known for his longstanding friendship with the Khan family, was also present. In a viral clip, he was seen urging the paparazzi to maintain decorum while covering the mourners, reminding them to behave respectfully. Others who visited the residence to pay their respects included Shabana Azmi, Neelam Kothari, Rakul Preet Singh, and Jackky Bhagnani. The film fraternity came together to stand by the Khan family, who have long been an integral part of Bollywood’s extended social circle. A graceful life remembered Born in 1944, Zarine Khan led a life steeped in art, family, and creativity. She began her journey in the Hindi film industry with a brief acting stint, appearing in ‘Tere Ghar Ke Samne’ (1963) alongside Dev Anand. However, it was her flair for design and aesthetics that truly defined her later years. She went on to establish herself as a renowned interior designer, working on numerous high-profile projects across India and abroad. Zarine’s refined taste and sophisticated approach earned her recognition as one of the most respected names in luxury interiors. Marriage and family Zarine met Sanjay Khan, one of Bollywood’s most charming leading men of the 1960s and 1970s, during the early years of his acting career. The two married in 1966, and their partnership remained one of the most enduring in the industry. Together, they raised four children — Sussanne Khan, an interior designer and entrepreneur; Zayed Khan, an actor; Simone Arora, a designer; and Farah Ali Khan, a jewellery designer. The Khan family has long been admired for their close ties to both the film and design worlds, with their home often seen as a hub of creativity and hospitality. Health struggles and passing According to reports by News18, Zarine had been battling age-related health issues for some time. She passed away peacefully at her residence in Mumbai on Friday morning. Her demise has left a void not only in her family’s lives but also in the hearts of those who knew her for her warmth, grace, and artistic spirit. Messages of condolence have flooded social media, with fans and colleagues remembering her as a dignified woman who embodied elegance and kindness. A legacy beyond cinema Though she appeared in just one feature film, Zarine Khan’s legacy extends far beyond acting. Her influence on interior design, particularly in high-end residential and hospitality projects, remains noteworthy. She was also a mentor to many young designers, including her daughters Sussanne and Simone, encouraging them to pursue their artistic dreams. As the film industry mourns her passing, friends and family remember her as a pillar of strength — a woman who balanced family, creativity, and compassion with remarkable poise.
