By Peter Agengre The Nabdam District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Francis Tobig, has announced the construction of a 10-seater toilet facility in Pelungu, aimed at reducing open defecation and improving sanitation in the community. He made the announcement while observing the National Sanitation Day cleanup exercise organized by the government in collaboration with community members and other stakeholders. Speaking to GBC News, Mr. Tobig said the new facility is part of the Assembly’s broader effort to promote hygiene and ensure a cleaner environment across the Nabdam District. He emphasized that open defecation remains a major public health concern, contributing to diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, particularly among children. “The construction of this 10-seater toilet in Pelungu is one of several interventions we are undertaking to address sanitation challenges in the district. We are committed to ensuring every community has access to decent toilet facilities,” he stated. The DCE further disclosed that the Assembly is working to complete several other toilet facilities under the Northern Development Authority (NDA) sanitation project. He assured residents that once completed, the facilities will be opened to the public to enhance hygiene and reduce environmental pollution. He also urged residents to maintain a culture of cleanliness by regularly participating in community sanitation exercises and properly managing household waste. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to achieving the government’s Open Defecation Free (ODF) target for all communities in the Upper East Region. Community members, assembly members, environmental officers, and traders who participated in the cleanup exercise expressed appreciation to the Assembly for the initiative. The Chief of Pelungu, Naab Sierig Soore Sobil IV, noted that the availability of public toilets will go a long way to discourage open defecation and promote good health practices. Source link
