Uzbekistan and the European Union Strengthen Strategic Energy Partnership - UzDaily.uz

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union in the energy sector is entering a new phase, the Ministry of Energy reported. Under the historic agreements reached, the country will receive direct investments and advanced technologies from leading European companies. Today, corporations such as Siemens Energy, EDF, Voltalia, and Total Energies are actively participating in projects aimed at increasing generation capacity in Uzbekistan. Particular importance is attached to the new initiatives presented at the Global Gateway forum held in Brussels. During the forum, memoranda of understanding were signed between the energy ministries of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), concerning the financing of the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydropower Project. According to the agreements, the EBRD will provide US$500 million, and the EIB US$200 million. Implementation of the agreements has already begun. Work is also underway with other European financial institutions. Under a new arrangement, a joint effort has been agreed upon for the modernization of electrical networks, involving European companies and banks. These projects will increase the efficiency of the energy system and reduce electricity transmission losses to consumers. Another key area of cooperation is the modernization of gas distribution systems. Leading Italian company Pietro Fiorentini is implementing projects to reduce losses and enhance the efficiency of gas distribution networks. Additionally, German company Linde has begun constructing an air separation unit at the site of Navoiyazot JSC. This project represents Linde’s first direct investment in Uzbekistan. The agreements concluded and the active participation of leading European corporations underscore the high level of confidence in Uzbekistan and their readiness for a long-term strategic partnership in the energy sector.
