The National Security Coordinating Secretariat (NSCS) has dismissed one operative and launched disciplinary proceedings against two others following revelations of their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities within the Oda River Forest Reserve. The decision follows a major intelligence-led operation on October 23, 2025, jointly conducted by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC). The raid, which targeted entrenched galamsey networks, led to the arrest of 15 illegal miners and nine additional suspects who falsely claimed to be National Security operatives. NAIMOS leads decisive operation at Oda River Forest Reserve; dismantles illegal mining network According to an official post by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on October 24, 2025, the operation was hailed as a significant breakthrough in dismantling a well-organized illegal mining ring. Security officials recovered a pistol, a pump-action shotgun, and several pairs of handcuffs evidence of the group’s coordination and potential threat. Following the raid, the NSCS launched an internal audit to verify whether any of the suspects were linked to the agency. The investigation identified three names matching current or former National Security operatives. One of them, identified as Issah Yakubu a temporary operative stationed at the Yapei Axle Weight Station was confirmed by colleagues to have connections to the illegal mining site. His appointment has since been revoked, and the National Security Coordinator has directed that he be prosecuted if found culpable. “Upon receiving this report, the National Security Coordinator has mandated the immediate revocation of Issah Yakubu’s appointment and has directed that he be prosecuted if found culpable,” the statement said. The two other identified operatives are currently under investigation. Authorities indicated that they would face immediate disciplinary action, including dismissal and prosecution, should their involvement be verified. Meanwhile, two suspects were also arrested during the operation for allegedly attempting to bribe officers with GH₵120,000 to secure the release of the detained miners. Police arrest two suspects in Mallam robbery, one on the run The failed bribe underscores the lucrative nature of illegal mining and the financial influence that continues to undermine law enforcement efforts. Authorities say the crackdown reinforces government’s renewed commitment to combating galamsey and holding all complicit officials accountable, regardless of rank or affiliation.
