An urgent health warning has been issued over a brand of tofu which could potentially cause "serious complications" if consumed. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a health alert warning shoppers in England against consuming Tofu King Paper Tofu after the product was found to have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes can cause flu-like symptoms including high temperature, muscles aches and pain, sickness and diarrhoea. However the FSA warns in rare cases the infection can potentially cause "serious complications" such as meningitis. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE The watchdog also adds that some groups will be more vulnerable to Listeria infections, such as those aged over 65, pregnant women, babies under a month old and people with weakened immune systems. Therefore, due to the health risks associated with Listeria monocytogenes, the FSA is warning all shoppers against consuming the affected batches of Tofu King Paper Tofu. Shoppers have been warned all 230g batches of Tofu King Paper Tofu with the use by date of 29 October 2025 may be affected by the issue and therefore should not be consumed. Tofu King has also issued a recall on the affected product and is asking shoppers to return the item to the store where they bought it. Shoppers with then be given a full refund for the item, regardless of whether or not they have a receipt. Point of sale notices should also be sold in all stores where the item is sold to explain to customers why the product is being recalled and what they can do if they have purchased the item.
