The Democrats have scored decisive victories in a series of elections across the US which were held exactly on year after Donald Trump’s presidential victory. The party held onto the Governorship of New Jersey and flipped the Governorship of Virginia while voters in California overwhelmingly agreed to redraw the state’s electoral map to more favour Democrats after Texas did the same to bolster Republicans. The most notable success, however, was in New York City where Zohran Mamdani, who was the official Democrat candidate but labels himself as a “Democratic Socialist,” will be the new mayor. Even Mr Trump seemed to acknowledge the scale of the losses, saying: “I don’t think it was good for Republicans”. But he also insisted the failure was because “Trump wasn’t on the ballot” despite him leading the party. (Photo by Angelina Katsanis / AFP) Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has start hearing arguments as to whether Mr Trump’s widespread use of tariffs without Congress’ approval is legal. And they seem sceptical as to the government’s arguments. And Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia looks into resuming nuclear testing if indeed the US does the same. Read on for more updates. Nov 05, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Trump's wild excuse for Republican losses Benedict Brook Donald Trump has acknowledged the drubbing the Republican party received in Tuesday’s elections. The Governor races in Virginia and New Jersey were bot won by Democrats, California’s push to redraw its electoral map to favour Democrats was passed by voters and Democrat Zohran Mamdani romped it home in the New York mayoral race. Other, less significant, elections across the country also saw the Democrats gain ground in places Mr Trump won in the US presidential race. All too seemingly no avail. Nov 05, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Supreme Court doesn't seem convinced of Trump's tariffs Benedict Brook Aside from election losses, Donald Trump might have something else to worry about on Wednesday, US time. The Supreme Court held opening arguments on a case brought to it to rule as to whether Mr Trump has overstepped his powers when it comes to tariffs – and the justices don’t seem that convinced by government arguments. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein) If Mr Trump wins, it will confirm powers on the US president that hadn’t been acknowledged before. If he loses. it could upend almost all his tariffs meaning he would have to go through Congress to enact them. Mr Trump has darkly said that would lead the US to become a “third world country”. Billions of dollars in customs revenue and a key lever in Mr Trump’s trade wars are at stake, while the conservative-dominated court once again grapples with the attempts to expand presidential power. Nov 05, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Putin orders plans for resumption of nuclear tests Benedict Brook Vladimir Putin has ordered the country look at resuming nuclear testing if the US does the same. The Russian leader’s comments come days after Donald Trump claimed other countries had been secretly nuclear testing for years and the US had to respond and resume its own tests. It’s not clear if Mr Trump is referring to nuclear delivery systems tests – and Russia has indeed been testing new missiles – or actual nuclear detonation tests which no major nuclear power has around 30 years. Nov 05, 2025 HIGHLIGHT New York voters shrug off Trump threats as Mamdani wins Benedict Brook On the streets of Bushwick, in the heart of Brooklyn, a group are wobbling down the street murdering Liza Minelli’s New York, New York. “If you can make it here, you’ll make it anywhere,” they scream as fireworks crackle and bang in the distance. It’s fair to say this part of New York is very happy about Zohran Mamdani’s win in the city’s mayoral elections. And they’re not that bothered about what Donald Trump thinks of it either. Nov 05, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Mamdani: 'We have toppled a political dynasty' Zohran Mamdani declared victory late Tuesday following his unexpected win in New York City’s mayoral race. He has claimed the city has a “mandate for a new kind of politics”. “New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that,” he said in his victory speech. The democratic socialist expressed gratitude to his supporters, pointing out the “forgotten” working-class New Yorkers his campaign sought to represent.
