Traditional lion, dragon dance showcases Sarawakian unity, teamwork, spirit of nation building

By Karen Bong KUCHING, Nov 1: The traditional lion and dragon dance, which sees participation from Chinese, Malay, and Dayak communities, embodies the Sarawakian way of life, where teamwork, inclusivity, and shared effort drive the spirit of nation building. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the art form is more than just cultural performance but a living symbol of unity. “The lion and dragon dance is a symbol of unity, not just cultural heritage, as there are multi races, including Chinese, Malay and Dayak, coming together to practice the dance and carry on the spirit. This is what it is in Sarawak as part of our nation building,” he said when officiating the Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 at Ang Cheng Ho Quarry’s multipurpose hall in Batu Kawa today. Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, added that participants were not only there to compete but also to contribute towards Sarawak’s continuous progress as a harmonious and progressive State admired by others. “Even the Dayak also participate in the sport. This is the Sarawak way of life. It requires individual talent but, most importantly, teamwork to coordinate the routine. That teamwork spirit is what we’re after in nation building when everyone comes together to do something, such as the organisers who continue this event,” he said. He also expressed his delight at the strong presence of local teams, saying that the growing participation of Anak Sarawak reflects the increasing appreciation for this traditional art form. “I’m happy to see many local teams from Sarawak today as it is important for Anak Sarawak to be part of this. This reflects a growing interest in this traditional art form,” he said, noting that Sarawak continues to be respected for its harmony and progress. Dr Sim also thanked the international teams for joining the competition and helping foster friendship and mutual understanding through cultural exchange. “Thank you to the international teams for coming and helping with Sarawak nation building. By 2030, I hope Sarawak will be even more prosperous and excel in many fields including arts and sports. All of you are already winners with your participation and presence, so continue to build friendships and show the best sportsmanship,” he said. Returning this year after the success of its inaugural edition in 2024, the Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 drew more than 500 performers from 46 teams across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China. Organised by the Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) and sanctioned by the Dragon and Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia, the event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak. A total of RM65,000 in prizes are being offered across four main categories: Northern Lion Dance, High Pole Southern Lion Dance, Traditional Southern Lion Dance, and Moonlight Dragon. Among the top contenders are the defending High Pole Southern Lion Dance champions from China and the reigning Moonlight Dragon World Champions from Johor, promising spectators a captivating display of artistry, athleticism, and cultural excellence. Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, Pemanca Tan Kun Gee, and CMAA president Chester Lim were among the distinguished guests present. — DayakDaily
