Tom Brady: Drake Maye 'seems to be getting better' as Patriots QB each week

Drake Maye’s Year 2 performance thus far has drawn rave reviews from those around the NFL. Now he can add Tom Brady to that list. The seven-time Super Bowl champion was asked during an interview with Sports Illustrated what he’s seen on the field from the New England Patriots quarterback. “I think he’s obviously very smart and detailed. And I always appreciate the quarterbacks in the NFL that read coverages, throw to the open guy, play on time, play on rhythm in the pass game,” Brady said. “And (offensive coordinator) Josh (McDaniels) is so good at instructing him in that way, and he’s really doing it. And he’s just taking the coaching. He’s learning. Every week he seems to be getting better.” Each week it seems Maye sets a new Patriots record or does something that hasn’t been done in an NFL game in years. Sunday marked the seventh straight game Maye reached at least 200 passing yards with a quarterback rating of at least 100. Only four other quarterbacks have reached that feat. Peyton Manning (2004) Tom Brady (2007) Aaron Rodgers (2011, 2020) Patrick Mahomes (2018) Maye turned in another strong performance in the New England Patriots’ 32-13 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The quarterback went 18-of-24 for 282 yards and three touchdowns. Even though he was sacked six times — five times by Myles Garrett — Maye continued to showcase his poise, accuracy and ability to find an open receiver. The UNC product heard “MVP!” chants from the Gillette Stadium crowd throughout the game. “It’s been really cool to see the difference from last year to this year. Man, it’s been a journey and the fans have been through it the last couple years,” Maye said after the win. “Credit to them. ... The best fans in the league and they continue to show out every week.” Sunday’s win marked the fifth straight for New England as it sits atop the AFC East standings. Maye has now surpassed his win total from the 2024 season when the Patriots finished 4-13.
