To mark its 175th anniversary the Richmond Times-Dispatch enlisted three historians to help fashion a list of 25 people who shaped Richmond or put Richmond on the map. Here are more than 30 others who historians say had a major impact on Richmond in the last 175 years. The Richmond Times-Dispatch isn’t the only business in Richmond that’s been around for 175 years. The story of the Richmond Times-Dispatch is rooted in a tale of four newspapers: The Dispatch, The Times, The Leader and The News. Rivalries often define eras of different sports, and frequently stand as the hallmark representation of a sporting locality's identity. When The Times-Dispatch’s earliest predecessor, the Richmond Dispatch, was first published in 1850, Richmond comprised less than three square miles and had a meager population of roughly 27,000 people. From saloons and tearooms to soda fountains and Sally Bell's, discover how Richmond dining has changed over the past 175 years. For the 175th anniversary of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, we are taking a look back at the moments that changed Richmond, including many that were chronicled by The Times-Dispatch.
