There’s no denying that there’s been a distinct chill in the air this week. As you wait for the car windows to demist on a morning or debate with your household over whether it’s too early to put the heating on, you might find yourself longing for a sunny getaway. Luckily there are many destinations served by Manchester Airport which offer autumn sunshine and guaranteed warmth. The Canary Islands are a firm favourite among Brits holidaying at this time of the year and it’s easy to see why as they enjoy pretty much year-round sunshine. Unlike Tenerife or Lanzarote, Gran Canaria remains under the radar for many British tourists. Yet this beautiful island is often one of the warmest in the Spanish archipelago and in October you can expect highs of 26C. Although it’s important to note that this doesn’t include baggage allowance or seat allocation. Gran Canaria is known for its natural beauty, ranging from volcanic landscapes to sweeping golden sand dunes. In 2024 a fishing village on the island was even named the best holiday resort in the Canary Islands by consumer group Which?. Puerto de Mogán, which features beautiful white-washed houses, a quaint marina and a charming old town, beat other popular resorts, including Los Cristianos in Tenerife and Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria. One of Gran Cranaria’s top attractions is Masapalomas in the south of the island. It’s a huge expanse of golden sand dunes right next to the sea with an old lighthouse dominating the coastline. It straddles a peninsula which juts out from the north of the island, with the port on one side and the huge Las Cantaras beach on the other. Away from the beach, the city is packed full of beautiful buildings including the Christopher Columbus house, a colonial-style mansion which belonged to the first governors of Gran Canaria and was where Columbus stayed during his stops in the Canary Islands on his way to the Americas.
