The Rewind: Anchorage Wolverines sweep Kenai River, Brandon Pili shines in prime time for Seattle Seahawks

Welcome back to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports. Last week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and professional levels, as well as some developments on the college front. The 2025 high school hockey season kicked off with a big upset. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey team notched the biggest win for the program in recent memory. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas. Headlines and highlights The 2025-26 high school hockey season got underway over the weekend and saw reigning state champion West Anchorage fall in stunning fashion to South 7-1 on Friday night at the Ben Boeke Ice Arena. Leading the offensive charge for the Wolverines in their upset of the Eagles was Trey Lulay, who recorded a pair of goals in the third period. On Saturday, Dimond got a hat trick from Carter Woodhead in a 10-1 blowout of Bartlett. The senior defenseman led the team with a game-high four goals and assisted on two others for the Lynx as they cruised to a 1-0 start against the Golden Bears. [Reigning champs repeat with historic performances at Region IV swimming finals in Anchorage] On the college sports scene, the UAA men’s basketball team hit the court to begin the 2025-26 season over the weekend. The Seawolves dropped both of their road matchups against a pair of nationally ranked opponents at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Lakeland, Florida. UAA on Friday fell to No. 15 Florida Southern 88-76, and lost 96-62 on Sunday to No. 4 Daemen. “We are pretty banged up right now, and it showed in the first half against an extremely talented and experienced opponent,” UAA head coach Rusty Osborne said in a statement after the second game. “I’m proud of the fight we showed in the second half, though, and I’m sure that we will learn some things from tonight. We’re looking forward to getting back home and seeing our fans come out and support us next weekend.” Leading the team in scoring and rebounds in both games was senior guard Akok Machar, who recorded a combined 28 points and 12 boards. [UAA hockey stuns No. 6 Denver with overtime win] The Anchorage Wolverines were back on the road last weekend but didn’t have to travel far as they swept the Kenai River Brown Bears in a two-game series. They outscored the Brown Bears a combined 11-6 and were led in goals by forward Chase Trompeter, who recorded a pair in each game. “It was a good weekend against Kenai,” head coach Mike Aikens said. “We have gotten seven out of the eight available points the last two series, so we are progressing and learning what it takes to win at this level. We have to continue to improve defensively and limit our opponents’ opportunities. I am really pleased with our offensive production. We were led this weekend by our line of Connor Jalbert, Chase Trompeter and Jack McKenna, who combined for a total of 18 points on the weekend.” Alaska stars shining Outside Anchorage’s Brandon Pili had the best game of his career as a Seattle Seahawk in the team’s 38-14 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 9. In his second straight prime-time appearance, the former Dimond star played a season-high 20 defensive snaps and posted a season-high two total tackles, including a solo. However, his most impactful play came on one of his nine special teams snaps and resulted his first career forced fumble. The 334-pound defensive tackle lined up on kickoff for the first time since his middle or high school days and punched the ball out of rookie kick returner Jaylin Lane’s grasp, and Seattle’s Connor O’Toole recovered the loose ball. On the Seahawks’ next play from scrimmage, they took a 21-0 lead on a one-play scoring drive. “I was surprised,” Pili said about being put on the kickoff. “But I didn’t mind it. Wherever they need me, wherever the team needs me, I’m happy to provide where I can.” [New team, same dream: Alaska’s Brandon Pili has a great chance to extend NFL career] Anchorage’s Jeremy Swayman bounced back from a rough night between the pipes for the Boston Bruins last Monday with a stout performance in a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. The former South standout made 28 saves on 29 shots on goal to pick up his fourth win of the season and second in his last three appearances. “Sometimes in this league, it’s just not your night, and that was one of those games where it was just not (my) night,” Swayman said about his struggles in the previous start. “Every day the sun rises is a new day, and keep pushing forward and getting the right results. And I think at this stage of my career, I’ve done a really good job of that.” Girdwood’s Ava Earl helped lead the Northwestern University women’s cross country running team to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last week, the program’s best finish since 1986. Individually, the graduate student came in 13th place with a time of 20 minutes, 24.5 seconds. Anchorage’s Aaron Hampton saw his most extensive defensive action yet for the University of California, Berkeley football team in a 31-21 loss to the University of Virginia on Saturday. Starting in place of injured starter Cade Uluave, the sophomore linebacker and former West star made the most of his opportunities: Hampton led the team with a career- and game-high 15 total tackles (exceeding his combined total from the previous eight games), including seven solos. “I can hang with these dudes,” Hampton said about what he learned from the experience. “This is my first game that I’ve gotten multiple reps and it just proved to myself that I belong here and I can play here.” Golden Bears head coach Justin Wilcox praised the former walk-on for his impressive performance as well. “An admirable job, he’s a very tough kid, he competes really hard,” he said. “There’s not a player on our team that’s just going to step in and be Cade, but I thought Aaron went in there and competed really hard, played very hard, and he did some good things and there are some things he’ll have to get better at.” Sophomore Malachi Casey of Anchorage had a monster game to help lead the Sierra College football team to a 51-21 win over Shasta on Saturday. The former Dimond two-sport standout recorded five catches for the second week in a row and posted a season-high 126 receiving yards. He also scored his fifth touchdown of the season on a 52-yard catch and run. Juneau’s Jamal Johnson had his most productive game since the season opener for the Fort Lewis College football team in a 44-24 win over Adams State University on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore running back and former Juneau-Douglas star tied his season high in rushing yards with 68 and scored his second touchdown of the season. Fairbanks’ Earl Parker received another pair of Division I offers last week and went on to help lead the Hutchison Community College football team to a 27-12 win over Butler Community College on Saturday. The sophomore defensive back and former Lathrop standout recorded his 15th solo tackle of the season and a pass breakup. His latest offers came from the University of Texas at El Paso and South Dakota State University, which fellow Alaskan gridiron star Jack Nash of Colony fame currently calls home. Anchorage’s Mac Swanson recorded his third goal of the season for the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team in a narrow 4-2 loss to the University of Minnesota Duluth on Halloween night. He attempted the second-most shots on goal of the season with three and broke a 2-2 tie with his score. Anchorage’s Raythan Robbins made his fourth start of the season as the goalie for the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team Friday. While he didn’t pick up his third win, the former Anchorage Wolverine helped the Beavers earn a point in a double overtime game that ended in a 4-4 tie by making 23 saves on 27 shots on goal. Anchorage’ Landon Drumm received a Division I offer from the University of West Virginia just a few days after helping lead the Arapahoe High School varsity football team to a decisive 28-23 win over Eaglecrest on Friday night. The former South standout scored the Warriors’ first points of the game on a 22-yard receiving touchdown and what ended up being the game-winner on a 12-yard scoring catch. He finished with four receptions for 68 receiving yards, and both totals led the team. Fast Forward Prep Swimming ASAA State Championship at Bartlett, Friday-Saturday The 2025 postseason will officially come to a close this weekend with the top prep swimmers in Alaska descending on Anchorage to face off for the final time with a chance to seize or defend individual and team state titles. Volleyball Region IV championship tournament, Tuesday-Saturday at Service The 2025 postseason will begin this week across the state with regional action. The Anchorage School District teams will square off on the home court of the higher seeds and then will play the remainder of the event on the Hillside. College Volleyball UAA vs. Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center, Thursday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves will continue their three-match homestand this week with a pair of bouts against nationally ranked conference foes — starting with the No. 8 Red Leafs, who they upset last month on the road. On Saturday night, they’ll take on No. 15 Western Washington for the second time this season, looking to avenge a four-set loss from a month ago. [UAF volleyball team rallies to complete season sweep of UAA] Women’s basketball UAA vs. Northwest University at the Alaska Airlines Center, Friday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves will open their 2025-26 season with a two-game series to tip off the era of first-year head coach Matt Thune. Men’s basketball UAA vs. Evergreen State at the Alaska Airlines Center, Friday at 11 a.m. The Seawolves will be on their home court for the first time this season later this week for a pair of games, the first of which will be played in front of elementary school students from across the Anchorage School District.
