By Derik Gustafson Southgate Elementary School principal The Austin Elementary Walk-a-Thon once again proved to be one of the most anticipated and exciting events of the school year. On Oct. 8, families, students, and staff gathered on the school grounds for a day that blended fun, fitness, and community spirit — all while supporting an important cause. With support from the Austin Police Department and the neighborhoods surrounding our school, the Walk-a-Thon reminded everyone of what makes Sumner, Banfield, Neveln and Southgate elementaries such special spaces. This annual event is more than just a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of togetherness. Families walked side by side, cheering on students as they made their way around the course. Teachers and staff joined in the fun, motivating students and encouraging community. The sight of parents walking with their children, grandparents cheering from the sidelines, and siblings participating together highlighted the strong bonds that make school communities one big family. The success of the Walk-a-Thon is a direct reflection of community spirit. Each year, the event raises vital funds to support the Parent Teacher Club (PTC) at each school. These contributions go directly toward enhancing classroom learning, improving educational resources and sponsoring school events that enrich the student experience. Whether it’s providing updated technology, supporting field trips, or funding PBIS even, the money raised helps ensure students have opportunities that go beyond the classroom and create connection to the District’s Strategic Priorities. Behind the scenes, the event’s success depended on the dedication of countless volunteers who organized, coordinated, and encouraged participation. Their teamwork made the event run smoothly and created lasting memories for everyone involved. In a time when schedules are busy and families are pulled in many directions, the Walk-a-Thon served as a meaningful reminder of the power of coming together for a shared purpose. Our students did an amazing job during the Walk-a-Thon, walking, hopping, skipping, and jumping their laps around the school and wound up exceeding the walking goal for the day. To celebrate, each Principal hosted a Rock and Roll Recess before the end of October. With each step, Austin families not only raised funds but also strengthened the sense of unity that defines our schools. The Walk-a-Thon was more than an event—it was a celebration of community, generosity, and the belief that when we walk together, we move forward together.
