Thailand, Cambodia End Border Conflict at ASEAN Summit with Trump as Witness

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prime Minister of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially signed a peace agreement to resolve the border conflict between their countries during the 47th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, on Sunday, according to Antara. The signing ceremony in ASEAN Summit was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, this year’s ASEAN Chair, and U.S. President Donald Trump. In his remarks, President Trump highlighted the important role of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar in bringing Thailand and Cambodia to the negotiation table.“I want to thank Prime Minister Anwar of Malaysia. I called him right at the beginning and I said, you know, you have two countries that are fighting right next to you. We need a third place. We need a sort of a neutral place, right?” Trump said."And he was there, and I said to him, you know, if we get this solved, I'm coming to your country. And I told the truth, didn't I?""I held phone calls with both leaders. I was actually at Turnberry in Scotland when I did this, and we had a lot of phone calls, the three of us and then the four of us. We had a lot of phone calls."Trump encouraged both sides to pursue peace rather than resort to unnecessary bloodshed, a sentiment echoed by PM Anwar Ibrahim. He also emphasized the United States’ commitment to regional stability and global peace, particularly when tensions escalated along the border. After months of intensive dialogue, a ceasefire agreement was reached in late July. Both countries agreed to halt all hostilities and work toward strengthening neighborly relations.Under the agreement, Cambodian war prisoners will be released, and ASEAN observers, including representatives from Malaysia, will be deployed to monitor compliance and ensure lasting peace.Trump noted that the resolution could serve as a model for other conflict-prone regions, including Gaza in the Middle East.Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed gratitude to the United States for its engagement and to President Trump for personally reaching out to both leaders.“You personally did call both Prime Ministers to urge for a speedy peace settlement. I would say a great thank you. And we of course admire your tenacity, your courage, because the world needs leaders who promote peace strongly,” Anwar said. Both PM Hun Manet and PM Anutin Charnvirakul thanked ASEAN Chair Anwar Ibrahim and President Trump for their efforts in facilitating the peace process.Hun Manet described the moment as historic, while Anutin highlighted that the peace agreement honors the territorial integrity of both nations and fulfills a long-standing desire of the people.Editor’s Choice: Trump Praises Prabowo's Contribution to Gaza-Israel Peace at ASEAN SummitClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
