Supreme Court raps Delhi Police over delay in reply to 2020 riots bail pleas

The Supreme Court on Monday hauled up the Delhi Police for not filing its response to the bail pleas filed by Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and three others booked for their alleged involvement in the 2020 North East Delhi riots.A bench comprising justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria observed that it had given the Delhi Police sufficient time to respond to the pleas and made it clear that the matter will be disposed of on October 27.The counsel for the Delhi government sought two more weeks to respond to the pleas. The bench, however, posted the matter for Friday. The bench observed that the accused have been in jail for about five years without trial. The riots occurred in February 2020 following clashes over the then-proposed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). As per the Delhi Police, the riots caused the death of 53 persons and injured hundreds. The instant case relates to accusations that the accused had hatched a larger conspiracy to cause multiple riots. The FIR in this case was registered by a Special Cell of the Delhi Police under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the UAPA.Live EventsMost of the accused were booked in multiple FIRs, leading to multiple bail petitions before different courts. Most have been in custody since 2020. Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
