Suits Reboot With Mike Ross Can Officially Avoid The Rachel Problem

For years, fans have clamored for a Suits sequel, but the future of the legal drama franchise is now more hopeful than ever. The original ending of Suits aired in 2019, but the USA Network favorite skyrocketed to global popularity after Netflix acquired the series for streaming. Just as millions discovered it via Netflix, however, Suits was sadly already over. Creator Aaron Korsh tried to build on the momentum by creating a spinoff, but Suits LA quickly fell flat for most viewers who anticipated a reunion of iconic Suits characters. Given that seasons 8 and 9 are widely considered the worst seasons of Suits, it stands to reason that the return of two key characters could revamp the franchise again. Meghan Markle's Return To Acting Means A Suits Comeback Is Not Impossible The Duchess Will Cameo In An Upcoming Amazon MGM Film Without question, two of the best characters in Suits were Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) and Rachel Zane (Meghan, Duchess of Sussex née Markle). Mike was always the true protagonist of Suits, as his secret as a non-Harvard graduate drove the plot in the first few seasons. Arguably just as consequential, however, was the storyline following Mike’s relationship with Rachel. As such, it’s unsurprising that many lamented the loss of both characters in Suits season 7. While Mike and Rachel themselves got a happy ending in Seattle, it seemed they would never return on-screen due to the Duchess of Sussex’s responsibilities. She and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, were married in May 2018, just before Suits season 7 finished airing. Following the royal wedding, Meghan Markle quit acting altogether to focus on philanthropy, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. Yet, the two royal family members have appeared on-screen for the 2022 documentary Harry & Meghan and the 2025 lifestyle show With Love, Meghan. Now, Meghan Markle’s return to acting means that Rachel Zane’s exit from Suits may not be her last appearance. The Duchess of Sussex will cameo in the upcoming Amazon MGM film Close Personal Friends, starring Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding. Though she will reportedly portray herself, this is still the first fictionalized role the Duchess has had since leaving Suits in 2018. Furthermore, it paves the way for future acting opportunities, including a role reprisal. It Would Be Hard For Suits To Bring Mike Back Without Rachel A Second Time Her Character's Absence Is Always Palpable Now that Meghan Markle has officially broken the seal on her acting career, it only makes viewers more excited about a potential Suits reunion. Mike and Rachel were arguably the best couple in Suits, but Mike’s return in the final season felt incomplete without his perfect match. When pressed by another character, Mike simply implied Rachel was working in Seattle. Unfortunately, that excuse can’t be used again if a Suits movie, miniseries, or reboot is created. Rachel was an incredibly important figure in Mike’s life, and it would be difficult to believe he’d leave her at home once again. What once functioned as an acceptable explanation would now be a plot contrivance, as Rachel’s absence would only spark further questions. Suits LA explained Donna was at home with their son during Harvey's brief trip to California. If Rachel were to be the only main character missing from a new Suits project, it would call into question Mike’s marriage, the success of their clinic in Seattle, and everything else the original series worked so hard to establish. Suits LA even ran into a similar issue when Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) returned without Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty). Just like Harvey and Donna, Mike’s role in Suits is, in many ways, inextricably linked to Rachel. From the pilot episode of Suits onward, it was clear Mike and Rachel’s storylines would be interconnected. After the series finale, however, Mike and Rachel’s epilogue is just as pivotal, making Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s return a necessity for any future Suits projects. After Suits: LA's Failure, A Suits Reboot With The OG Cast Is The Only Way To Go NBC Learned The Hard Way That Suits Can't Be Easily Replicated With Meghan Markle’s reprisal of Rachel Zane possible, it now seems like the only feasible option to revive the Suits franchise. Despite the Suits LA cast being packed with talented actors and star-studded guests, the spinoff never found its footing, struggling to be original and unique while maintaining a tether to the original series. In that sense, Suits LA was doomed from the start, as the characters, tone, and overarching plot were conceptualized as a unique, standalone series. To make it fit as a Suits spinoff, creator Aaron Korsh added in a subplot that linked Harvey Specter to the new lead, Ted Black (Stephen Amell)— which, ironically, perfectly encapsulated its biggest issue. Despite the buzz surrounding Suits LA’s premiere, it quickly became evident that most fans weren’t truly interested in a spinoff; they just missed the original Suits. The small appearances of Harvey and Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) only underscored the fact that the new characters paled in comparison to the originals, be it nostalgia or rose-colored glasses.
