The Duffer Brothers confirm Stranger Things season 5 will answer two series-long questions introduced in season 1 of the Netflix series. Stranger Things season 5 will bring one of Netflix's most popular, long-running series to an end. The final episodes will see the core characters in Hawkins trying to stop Vecna from taking over the world using the Upside Down. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about Stranger Things season 5's latest trailer, the Duffer brothers confirmed two major questions from season 1 will be answered in the final episodes. Matt Duffer revealed the remaining eight episodes of the show will answer what the Upside Down really is, and why Will was truly taken during season 1: So much of the season was built around the idea of coming full circle, answering many of the questions that were posed all the way back in season 1. I think the two biggest questions that we didn’t really answer in season 1 that we do answer this season is ‘what is the Upside Down, truly?’ and ‘why was Will taken?' The newest Stranger Things season 5 trailer confirmed a wild final battle to come, as parts of the Upside Down start to heavily envelop areas of Hawkins. At the end of the trailer, Vecna pulls Will up with his telekinesis, telling him he needs his help "one last time." Whatever his plans are, Will has always been a central part of them. Given the Duffer brothers' statement, though, it seems like Will getting taken was purposeful, but in a more specific way than has been revealed so far. There's a reason why Vecna specifically chose him out of everyone on the cast of Stranger Things. Whatever makes him so vital, it seems the antagonist's season 5 plans will reveal it. As for the Upside Down, all that's truly known about the alternate dimension is that it looks like Hawkins because of when the rift opened between worlds at the start of season 1. Vecna shaped much of it to his image as well, being responsible for controlling the Demogorgons and the Mind Flayer since the very start of the show. Additional context to both these questions may be what the group needs to stop Vecna for good. Finding out the origins of the Upside Down and why Will is so important to the villain might be the exact context the team needs in order to defend their world. Just how well their upcoming plans work, though, remains to be seen.
