STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton will be hosting a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner conference on Wednesday. The event, also called the SAFE conference, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the hospital, and will take place during Forensic Nurses Week. According to a flyer for the conference, the event will feature a full day of education and networking as the hospital celebrates its SAFE nursing team. “A sexual assault awareness and information conference for nurses and senior-level nursing students wanting to find out more about how they can make a difference in a survivor’s path to healing,” the flyer noted. “Explore career pathways to becoming a SAFE nurse.” The workshop will be held in the Sipp auditorium and will cover evidence collection and documentation, legal/ethical considerations, trauma-informed care, and collaboration with community partners. As previously reported, Richmond Medical is a designated SAFE Center of Excellence, providing best-practice services for victims of sexual assault. The hospital’s trained SAFE staff works with victims to enhance the availability of services, improve the collection of forensic evidence and encourage victim participation in the judicial process.
