The Star Market over the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton was closed this week due to potential asbestos contamination, authorities said. State officials notified the city’s Health and Human Services Department on Tuesday that demolition work at the supermarket “may have resulted in the release of asbestos into the building,” which could pose a pressing health risk, department Commissioner Shin-Yi Lao said in a statement. The Austin Street store, a noted Mass. Pike landmark remains closed while the state’s Department of Environmental Protection completes an investigation. “Star Market will only be allowed to reopen when and if any asbestos is found, is removed, and/or contained,” Lao said. Customers and employees who were in the supermarket and have questions about their health risk may call the department at 617-796-1420 or email questions to starmarketquestions@newtonma.gov, Lao added.
