Some high school students granted automatic admission to Spring Arbor University

SPRING ARBOR, MI — Seniors graduating from a pair of Jackson County school districts now have an easier path to enrolling in college in 2026. Spring Arbor University announced in mid-October Grass Lake Community Schools and East Jackson Community Schools signed up for the university’s new Deep Roots Direct Admission Program, according to a press release announcing the partnerships. Through the program, graduating high school seniors who meet the university’s admissions standards are granted automatic acceptance to the university. The program is designed to make the transition from high school to college more accessible to students while strengthening educational ties within the community and encouraging students to grow in faith, learning and purpose. “This partnership not only simplifies the college admissions process and provides financial assistance to our graduates but also reinforces our belief that every student should have the opportunity to pursue their goals with confidence and support close to home,” said Nick Angel, superintendent of Grass Lake Community Schools. Grass Lake Community school was first to sign on to the program on Oct. 13, followed by East Jackson Community Schools a few days later. “We are always looking for ways to open new doors for our students’ futures,” said Jeff Punches, superintendent of East Jackson Community Schools. “Partnering with Spring Arbor University through the Deep Roots Direct Admission Program reflects our shared commitment to empowering students and supporting their future success.” To meet the university’s admission standards, the student must graduate with a 3.0 GPA. Students below 3.0 can still apply to attend the university, but their application will go through a committee process. “The Deep Roots Direct Admission Program reflects our dedication to helping students grow into who God created and called them to be,” said Brent Ellis, president of Spring Arbor University. “By partnering with more high schools like East Jackson, we’re creating a smoother path to a college education. We look forward to walking alongside these students as they pursue academic, personal, and spiritual growth.” The university extended an offer to every school district throughout Jackson County to join the partnership. Grass Lake and East Jackson Schools were first to sign an agreement, said Marla Sanford, Spring Arbor University vice president for enrollment and marketing. Hanover-Horton, Michigan Center, Vandercook Lake and Northwestern school districts have all agreed to join the program as well but have not yet officially signed on, Sanford said. Spring Arbor University is a Christian liberal arts university located in Spring Arbor, west of Jackson. Want more Jackson-area news? Bookmark the local Jackson news page.
