SONNA Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has awarded Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh the National Medal of Honor, recognizing his country’s enduring support for Somalia’s peace and state-building efforts over the past two decades. The presentation took place Thursday evening, following a ceremony in the Djiboutian city of Arta commemorating the 25th anniversary of the landmark 2000 peace conference that restored Somalia’s central government after years of civil war. President Hassan Sheikh said the award symbolizes the brotherhood, cooperation, and mutual respect that have defined relations between Somalia and Djibouti. “President Guelleh has stood with Somalia during its most difficult years,” Hassan Sheikh said, noting Djibouti’s continued role as a steadfast ally in Somalia’s recovery. He commended Djibouti’s leadership for hosting the Arta Peace Conference, which produced Somalia’s first transitional government and paved the way for subsequent national institutions. The Somali leader also praised Djibouti’s contributions to the African Union peacekeeping mission and its diplomatic efforts across the Horn of Africa. President Guelleh, who has led Djibouti since 1999, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and development, describing Somalia’s progress as integral to regional stability and shared prosperity. The National Medal of Honor is Somalia’s highest civilian distinction, awarded to individuals or states that have made exceptional contributions to the country’s unity, peace, and development.
