Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali National Army commandos and Jubbaland intelligence units, supported by international partners, killed nearly 20 al-Shabab fighters during coordinated ground and air operations in the Jamaame district of Lower Juba, officials confirmed Thursday. The Somali National Army’s elite Danab Commandos and Jubbaland security forces launched simultaneous offensives targeting al-Shabab hideouts in the villages of Qorahey, Siirey, Farbulaay, Turdho, Yiirey, Janaale Jaay, and Maleyley in the Jamaame district. According to a statement from the Jubbaland administration, at least 18 militants were killed and 32 others were wounded. Security units also destroyed a network of underground tunnels and shelters used by al-Shabab fighters in the forested outskirts of the district. The joint campaign forms part of an ongoing offensive to dismantle the group’s operational bases across southern Somalia. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida affiliate, has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than 15 years, seeking to overthrow the federal government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. Despite heavy losses, the group continues to stage ambushes, roadside bombings, and assassinations against Somali and allied forces.
