Sinnette appointed new Boxing Board chairman

Former professional boxer and Olympian Kirt Sinnette has been appointed Chairman of the newly-installed Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control (TTBBC). The five-member board was officially presented yesterday by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, during a ceremony held at Nicholas Towers, Independence Square, Port of Spain. Joining Sinnette on the board are Kim “Bonecrusher” Quashie, a former national boxer and current boxing coordinator, who will serve as Deputy Chairman; Kwanieze John, sport administrator; Hemrajh Rampersad, business administrator; and Bryan Basdeo, attorney-at-law. Installed for a two-year term, the TTBBC will operate under the Boxing Control Act, Chapter 21:52, Section 2(1), with a mandate to regulate, develop, and promote boxing throughout Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs expressed confidence that the new leadership will drive modernisation while nurturing the next generation of local boxing talent. Once ranked among the top ten middleweight boxers in the world, Sinnette, a respected figure in the boxing fraternity, brings decades of experience both inside and outside the ring, having also served as a local coach, a prominent member of the TSTT union’s executive and chairman of the Congress of the People political party. Minister Watts commended the diverse expertise of the new board, emphasising its role in balancing tradition with progress. “This Board now has the responsibility to uphold the proud history of boxing in Trinidad and Tobago and to modernise the sport to create a legacy of opportunities for upcoming athletes and coaches,” Watts said. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the sport as a vehicle for discipline, resilience, and national pride, particularly within grassroots communities.
