KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government has decided to fully support farmers on the instructions of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He announced that the provincial government is launching a direct cash assistance programme for farmers, under which the first installment of Rs 14,000 per acre will be provided for the purchase of DAP fertilizer. Addressing at a press conference in Karachi, Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said the verification process will be completed two to three weeks after wheat sowing. Farmers whose wheat cultivation is verified will receive an additional Rs 8,000 per acre to help them buy two bags of urea fertilizer. He said this initiative marks an important step by the Sindh government toward supporting farmers economically, boosting agricultural production, and achieving food self-sufficiency. He said that so far, assistance has been provided to 419,000 farmers, and this amount is being distributed through the “Hari Card.” More than 350,000 applications have been received for the Hari Card, of which verification for 180,000 farmers has been completed. Sharjeel Inam Memon added that the Sindh government has launched the e-challan system, which has received positive feedback from the public. Two prominent businessmen from Karachi have also praised the initiative. He noted that difficult decisions are often unpopular, but they are made to improve public welfare and maintain discipline. “We hope the government never has to collect a single rupee through challans because our real goal is to promote respect for the law,” he said. Responding to a question, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Constitution was framed by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the 18th Constitutional Amendment was passed during the Pakistan Peoples Party’s tenure, and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari played an active role in the 26th Amendment. He emphasised that the PPP is a democratic party that always upholds the Constitution and parliamentary traditions. All proposed amendments will be reviewed by the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), and decisions will be made by majority vote. He said the CEC will decide on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, and the Pakistan Peoples Party will act according to whatever is deemed best for Pakistan, its provinces, and its people. All amendment points will be presented to the CEC to ensure that decisions are made through consultation in the national interest. Answering another question, he said that governments are not afraid of anyone but are responsible for enforcing the law. Fines have been increased to ensure strict implementation of traffic rules. Each province has its own laws and jurisdiction, and if a vehicle is found unfit for driving, it will be confiscated according to the law. Speaking about the situation in Azad Kashmir, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that political activities are ongoing there and that political decisions will be taken at the appropriate time. Commenting on the incident of aerial firing by lawyers, he said that everyone is equal before the law. “If lawyers fired in the air, their act was wrong and unlawful,” he added. In response to a question about the police, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that every citizen has the right to challenge the law within legal bounds. However, if there is any misconduct by the police, the government will take strict and impartial action. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
