In what can come as a massive blow for the Indian team, with just over a month left for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, the BCCI has declared that star batter Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage during fielding in the third ODI against Australia. The brilliant display of athleticism saw Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey dismissed, but unfortunately, the moment did not end well for Iyer. The incident unfolded in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings as Carey looked to challenge Harshit Rana. On the fourth delivery, the former attempted to drive a short-pitched ball outside off, but a thick top edge sent the ball soaring towards deep third. Displaying incredible commitment, Iyer, positioned at backward point, sprinted back as the ball arced over his shoulder. Keeping his eyes locked on it, he dived full length to pull off a spectacular tumbling catch. The brilliant moment energised India in the field, but the celebrations were cut short almost immediately. Iyer remained on the ground, clutching his rib area, in discomfort. “Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. Teammates came to his side as the physio dashed onto the field. After receiving treatment, he was helped off the ground by the medical team, in discomfort.
