Shakur Stevenson has moved on from a Gervonta Davis fight after the latter said he would retire after the Jake Paul fight. Stevenson has been chasing the Tank Davis fight for sometime in an attempt to unify the division. Davis’ team has constantly said that it makes no sense for them to fight Shakur due to his style and the lack of commercial value involved in the fight. Shakur has been trying to secure the big fights following his deal with Matchroom, as he is reportedly on course to fight Teofimo Lopez in 2026. Teo is the WBO Junior Welterweight Champion, as a win would make Shakur a four-division champion. However, any hopes of Shakur facing Davis appear to be over when Tank said he will retire in ‘eight weeks.’ “Don’t mention ‘lil girl’ Gervonta Davis anymore. [I’m] officially moving on,” Stevenson said The Reasoning The practical reason for Davis to retire is the career-defining payday he is set to receive from the Jake Paul fight. “Tank” would be walking away financially set for life, having secured generational wealth outside the gruelling grind of legitimate championship defenses. Retiring now allows him to maintain his undefeated record and avoid the physical tolls of more wars. Conversely, the argument against Davis’ retirement is centered entirely on his championship legacy. As the reigning WBA lightweight champion, “Tank” would be walking away while still holding a major belt and before challenging himself against the elite of the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions. If Davis truly wants to be remembered among the greats, he needs the legacy-defining wins against other top competitors like Stevenson.
