A new immersive movie theater experience has arrived in Syracuse. Regal Destiny USA opened a ScreenX auditorium on Saturday, featuring 270-degree panoramic viewing and luxury recliner seats. The upgraded auditorium replaces the 4DX theater experience at the Syracuse mall’s 19-screen movie theater. ScreenX is a multi-projection cinema experience that extends the movie screen onto the auditorium’s sidewalls during select scenes, according to a press release. The technology adds dimensional depth to the visuals and “places viewers inside the action sequences.” Only two other theaters in Upstate New York currently feature ScreenX technology, at Regal Crossgates Mall in Albany and at Apple Cinemas in Greece, near Rochester. ScreenX first debuted in 2012 and is now in more than 370 theaters in 40 countries. Regal Destiny USA is showing the anime film “Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc” in its ScreenX auditorium this week. Upcoming films in the immersive format will include “Predator: Badlands,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Zootopia 2.” Tickets for the new experience will cost moviegoers a little extra. Adult prices for ScreenX are currently listed at $19.49 (plus fees) through Regal Cinemas’ website and Fandango, compared to $14.99 (plus fees) for standard screening of “Chainsaw Man.” The ScreenX update is part of a months-long renovation project that began earlier this year at Regal Destiny USA. Auditoriums, including the IMAX and RPX experiences, are getting plush recliners and advanced laser projection for improved picture quality; a new concession area will feature expanded food and beverage offerings, including a bar serving beer and wine; enhancements are being made to the lobby, corridors and restrooms; and more self-service kiosks are being installed for buying tickets. A limited number of screens have remained open during each phase of construction, but a final completion date has not been announced. It’s unclear if the IMAX theater will reopen in time for the upcoming release of expected blockbusters “Wicked for Good” (opening Nov. 21) and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (Dec. 19).
