by DayakDaily Team KUCHING, Nov 10: The Sarawak Immigration Department detained over 200 foreigners in a series of enforcement operations conducted in Miri, Bintulu, and Kapit over the weekend, as part of its ongoing efforts to tighten immigration control. According to reports by TVS, the Immigration Department coordinated operations, namely Ops Sapu and Ops Gegar, targeting both urban and interior areas. In Miri and Bintulu, enforcement officers conducted Ops Gegar and Ops Sapu from Nov 8 to 9, focusing on entertainment premises around Miri as well as the homes of sawmill workers in Tatau, Bintulu with checks carried out on 145 individuals, including locals and foreigners. “The results of the inspection found that 102 individuals were detained for various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, including not having valid travel documents and misuse of passes. “In addition, four employers were also given notices to appear at the immigration office to assist in investigations into the employment of illegal immigrants,” the statement said. In a separate operation held in Kapit, the department nabbed 101 foreigners under Ops Sapu, which was carried out across Kapit from 9.30am to 3.45pm yesterday (Nov 9). The operation was carried out by 10 immigration officers, including the special task team, as well as officers from the Sibu and Kapit divisions. “Of the 189 individuals checked, 188 men and one woman, a total of 100 men and one woman were detained for various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63,” the department said in a statement. The offences involved are stipulated under Section 6(1)(c) for not having valid travel documents and Section 15(1)(c) for overstaying. “This operation is an ongoing effort by the Sarawak Immigration Department to tighten control over the presence of foreigners in the interior, especially in combating violations of immigration laws,” it said. – DayakDaily
