by DayakDaily Team KUCHING, Nov 10: Sarawak is strengthening its long-standing partnership with Japan as it positions itself to participate actively in the international carbon market under the Article 6.2 Framework, while advancing cooperation in green technology, knowledge exchange, and human capital development. During the 30th Anniversary of Cooperation between the Japanese Malaysia Association (JMA) and Forest Department Sarawak in Tokyo today, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted that after three decades of close relations between the JMA and the Forest Department Sarawak, the time was right for both parties to expand cooperation towards exploring new high-impact areas. “Looking ahead, I am confident that this collaboration has the potential to expand into new areas such as professional and capacity development in carbon monitoring, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Geographic Information System (GIS) and biodiversity science. “Next is joint engagement in the international carbon market in line with the Article 6.2 Framework, youth and community empowerment programmes and student, researcher and academic exchange initiatives between Japanese institutions and universities in Sarawak,” he said, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS). He added that the bilateral cooperation beginning in 1995 is not only focused on forest restoration but also involves community development and environmental education throughout the State. “In this regard, the JMA has become a crucial bridge connecting the people of Japan and Sarawak,” he said. Abang Johari added that Sarawak values its relationship with Japan not only in trade and investment but also in knowledge transfer, cultural exchange, and shared environmental stewardship. Also present at the ceremony were Malaysian Ambassador to Japan, Dato Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, JMA Chairman, Furuya Keiji, Forest Department Sarawak Director, Datu Hamden Mohammad and other members of the delegation. – DayakDaily
