Rs 10,000 for 75 Lakh Women: Will BJP’s Tried-and-Tested Formula That Won MP, Maharashtra Work in Bihar?

Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, the state's NDA government launched the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, under which 75 lakh women in poll-bound Bihar received Rs 10,000 each to support self-employment and livelihood activities. takes a leaf out of the successful political playbook deployed by several parties, not the least BJP, to gain an advantage over their rivals ahead of crucial elections. Will this tried-and-tested formula deliver similar electoral gains in poll-bound Bihar? Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana Launched In Bihar PM Modi, on Friday, launched the 'Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana' under which 75 lakh women in poll-bound Bihar received Rs 10,000 each to support self-employment and livelihood activities. Following the launch, PM Modi said that the NDA government in Bihar was working for women empowerment, adding that the state would soon have the maximum number of 'Lakhpati Didis' in the country. Starting with an initial financial support of Rs 10,000, the scheme can provide up to Rs 2 lakh based on the success of the enterprise under the Rs 7,500-crore project, an initiative of the NDA government in the state aimed at promoting women's economic empowerment. While the PM launched the scheme virtually from Delhi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Samrat Choudhary, and several Union and state ministers joined it through video conference from Patna. Can The New Scheme Ensure An Edge To NDA In Bihar? The scheme mirrors similar welfare schemes that helped the BJP consolidate its vote base in states like Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Further, such schemes have not only benefitted the BJP, but other parties as well. The BJP government's "Ladli Bahan Yojna" in Madhya Pradesh and the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP government's "Ladki Bahin Yojna" in Maharashtra were seen by most political experts to be a game-changer in ensuring another term for the incumbent in both states in 2023 and 2024 respectively in polls considered tighter than what the final results suggested. The BJP governments had given Rs Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,500 monthly in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, respectively. Both state governments had launched these schemes in the years of their assembly polls. The BJP had promised similar cash transfer schemes for women in Chhattisgarh and Odisha before polls, and its governments have rolled them out. Further, the ruling BJP is in the process in implementing similar measures in Haryana and Delhi. The Congress has promised cash assistance to women in 2023 ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. A similar scheme was pivotal to the JMM's successful bid to retain government in Jharkhand in 2024. The Karnataka scheme is called "Gruha Lakshmi Scheme" under which the government offer Rs 2,000 monthly to women.
