Robin Hood review: Sean Bean steps out of the spotlight as newcomer shines

Robin Hood has begun its weekly run on MGM+, offering a fresh take on the legendary character's tale. Set in the early days before Rob of Loxley became the infamous Robin Hood, the series delves into his heart-wrenching losses and intricate love affairs. The Robin Hood series boasts a star-studded cast, including Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine. However, it's newcomer Jack Patten who truly shines, alongside his co-star Lauren McQueen, who plays Marian. This is Australian actor Jack Patten's first significant TV role, having only previously appeared in an episode of NCIS: Sydney. Despite this, his performance in the MGM+ series suggests a seasoned actor with a lengthy list of credits. Having graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney only in 2023, his dedication to the role is exceptional. Notably performing many of his own stunts, his commitment to portraying such an iconic character at his best has been recognised. Equally impressive is his co-star Lauren McQueen, who brilliantly portrays Maid Marian, with her character's distressing backstory and family history being explored in greater depth. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, convincingly portraying star-crossed lovers torn apart by familial politics. McQueen delivers a compelling performance as Marian, masterfully portraying her internal struggle between familial duty and personal desires, particularly in her interactions with her ruthless father, the Earl of Huntingdon (Steven Waddington). Sean Bean's portrayal of the sheriff is captivating, offering a refreshing departure from the traditional villainous depiction of the character in other adaptations. However, he is not the only standout performer, with Angus Castle-Doughty delivering a memorable performance as Friar Tuck. The series maintains an easy-to-follow pace, with 10 episodes set to air weekly until the finale on December 28. Each episode strikes a balance between action and drama, ensuring that no moment is wasted. The series certainly merits its primetime slot. While there has been no official announcement regarding the future of the show, it has made a promising start. Robin Hood airs weekly on MGM
