By Shikin Louis KUCHING, Nov 6: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved the RM123.78 million Army Veteran Housing project in Bukit Goram, Kapit — a long-awaited initiative to provide comfortable, well-equipped homes for veterans and their families. The proposed development spans 46.9 acres and will comprise 272 detached houses, community spaces, sports facilities and other key infrastructure, aimed at creating a dignified and supportive living environment for those who have served the nation. Works Minister and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project was made possible through the Premier’s swift and compassionate response to the long-standing request from local veterans. “I was informed that over RM100 million has been allocated for infrastructure and related works. This project will finally bring to life a plan that has been pending for more than 30 years,” he said during a luncheon gathering in Kapit, which was broadcast live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) on YouTube today. Nanta explained that the land for the housing project was originally purchased decades ago by veteran groups using their own funds but had remained undeveloped due to limited resources. “Many of the original landowners have passed away, but their heirs are still here,” he added. He said the issue was first raised during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Convention in February this year by a representative from Pelagus, who also leads the veterans’ association in Kapit. “Right after it was raised, the Premier turned to me and said, ‘Alex, we will help.’ That was how fast he acted,” Nanta recounted, adding that within two weeks, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki had visited Kapit to inspect the proposed site. Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the initiative reflects the government’s appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions of army veterans to the State and the nation. “We value the sacrifices of our veterans, and that is why we are developing infrastructure for their residential lots,” he said. He added that the government is also planning new resettlement areas for riverine communities to ensure more comfortable and sustainable living conditions. “This is to make it easier for our people along the river to have better homes and living environments,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
