“Run! Run! Run!” were the words my 15-year-old granddaughter heard, along with gunshots, on Sept. 10, 2025, as an active shooter attacked the high school in Evergreen, Colorado. Imagine the terror! My family now shares the trauma that 54% of Americans have experienced. We desperately need the protection included in the Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). A “Yes” vote on Question 2 this November will implement a red flag law in Maine, allowing families to petition courts directly for temporary weapon removal during a mental health crisis. Had this law been in place, so many shootings could have been prevented. How long will we go before standing up to recognize that we all need to pull together to stop gun violence?
