Rainfall and wind warnings have been issued for Prince Rupert and the northern coast of B.C. Oct. 22, Environment Canada issued the two alerts for the North Coast - coastal sections of the province, as strong winds and heavy rain are expected to roll in this evening and last until midday Thursday. The west coast of northern Vancouver Island, North and Central Coast sections and Haida Gwaii will be affected. A strong frontal system will cross Haida Gwaii and then move southeastward across the Central Coast, with winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour, according to Environment Canada. The system will reach the Central Coast and Northern Vancouver Island early in the morning. "If you have outdoor furniture, be sure to secure it as well as garbage and recycling bins or other outdoor items," the City of Prince Rupert stated. Environment Canada added that the high winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches, and could toss around loose objects that may cause injury or damage. Up to 100 millimetres of rain is expected, with the highest accumulations areas being the coastal communities between Portland Inlet and Milbanke Sound. "Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," Environment Canada stated. "Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."
