Rain: Tiruchi Corporation intensifies flood-mitigation and disease control

Tiruchi Corporation has stepped up relief and health measures across its limits following heavy rainfall caused by the northeast monsoon. Corporation and private vehicles have been deployed to pump out and drain rainwater that has accumulated along major roads and residential areas. Continuous operations are under way to prevent further stagnation. Clogs in storm-water drains are being cleared promptly upon receiving complaints. Heavy rain in Ariyamangalam, Old Palpannai, Kattur, Tiruverumbur, and nearby areas led to waterlogging, which has been cleared. Around 50 Corporation workers were deployed to carry out desilting work along Thillai Nagar Main Road. A 24-hour monitoring office has been set up to address complaints related to waterlogging caused by the northeast monsoon. Residents can register complaints through the helplines 8300113000 and 0431-3524200, which are operational round-the-clock. Officials said that 20 HP oil engine electric motors, wood cutting machines, and wastewater removal vehicles have been kept ready in all five zones. Severe waterlogging was identified in 12 locations, and the stagnant water has since been drained. The civic body has allocated ₹1 crore, with ₹20 lakh per zone, for repair of roads damaged by recent rain. Potholes on Thennur High Road, Kamatchiamman Kovil Street, and Salai Road have been filled. Desilting of storm-water drains and canals to a length of 159.61 km spread across all wards is on in full swing at an estimated cost of ₹2.36 crore. A total of 55 locations have been identified as very high, high, medium, and low vulnerable areas in the city. Schools, colleges, and community halls have been designated as relief centres to accommodate residents living in low-lying, flood-prone areas. Disease control To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, the Corporation has intensified disease control and sanitation measures in the affected localities. Patients were being given free treatment at medical camps focusing on skin infections and respiratory ailments. Health workers are also identifying residents with fever symptoms and offering treatment through Urban Primary Health Centres.
