Queensland Supreme Court sets aside state government’s temporary pause on gender-affirming care

Queensland’s temporary ban on children accessing puberty blockers has been set aside, after the mother of a trans teenager mounted a legal challenge in court. The temporary pause was put in place earlier this year after Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls flagged an independent review into the use of puberty blockers would be carried out. This followed revelations a 12-year-old was prescribed a puberty blocker by the Cairns Sexual Health Service in May 2024. Mr Nicholls claimed there were concerns with clinical decision making. On Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Callaghan allowed the appeal by the teenager’s legal representatives, setting aside the minister’s decision. More to come.
