QLD’s puberty blocker ban saga shows how not-for-profits fail the trans community

Queensland’s controversial ban on puberty blockers — safe and essential medication for children struggling with their gender identity — was overturned in October, with Supreme Court Judge Peter Callaghan deeming it unlawful. Celebrations rang out from trans people, and not-for-profit advocacy groups such as the Trans Justice Project and Equality Australia instantly claimed victory. It was short-lived. Judge Callaghan had ruled that Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls issued the initial ban without proper consultation, but stated he is allowed to issue a direction provided it is in writing and published in a manner accessible to the public.
