(CNN) - It’s been a full year of continuous measles transmission in Canada. The milestone is poised to set the country back decades on a global health commitment. All of the World Health Organization’s regions have committed to eliminating measles by 2030. This is defined by the absence of local virus transmission for any period longer than twelve months. Canada’s falling vaccination rates set the stage for measles cases to grow into a massive, ongoing outbreak that puts the country and region at risk of losing elimination status. In early November, the organization’s regional office will convene an annual meeting to formally determine the status of measles elimination across the region. The United States also faces scrutiny and is at risk of a similar fate due to ongoing measles transmission.
