The elite unit has accused the regional government of halting its salaries and benefits, alleging intimidation following growing tensions with authorities in Garowe.Garowe (HOL) — The Puntland Danab Commando Force has accused the regional government of halting their salaries and benefits while subjecting its members to ongoing threats, raising concerns of deepening friction between the elite force and authorities in Garowe. In a statement issued Monday, the Danab command said the elite force has “sacrificed their lives and sustained injuries defending Puntland” and remains “on standby to protect the safety of the public and the country at all times.” The unit, which was formed to safeguard civilians and secure Puntland’s borders, said more than 100 of its soldiers have been killed and over 50 others wounded in action. “Despite the challenges, Danab remains ready at all times to defend our country,” the statement read. “We welcome the newly recruited young police officers and look forward to working with them to strengthen the security of the capital.” The unit, led by Gen. Jimale Jama Takar, was among the forces that opposed Puntland’s shift to a one-person, one-vote electoral system and took part in the 2023 clashes in Garowe, which left about 30 people dead. In recent weeks, reports have circulated that the Puntland administration has cut salaries for the Danab unit and other regional forces operating in the Sool and Cayn regions, fueling further discontent within Puntland’s security ranks. The statement concluded with a call for national unity and restraint: “We urge all citizens to remain united and avoid acts that could harm our country,” the commanders said, invoking prayers for rain and mercy during the ongoing dry season.
