Prince William says he 'thinks constantly about the world his children will inherit'

Prince William has spoken candidly about his fears for his children’s futures in an exclusive interview, explaining how these concerns drive his commitment to tackling climate change. The future King, speaking to Hello! ahead of this year’s Earthshot Awards in Rio, Brazil, admitted he “thinks constantly about the world my children will inherit.” It has been five years since the Prince of Wales launched the Earthshot Prize, a global initiative aimed at mobilising environmental action. The programme brings together scientists, climate experts, and communities worldwide to find solutions to repair the planet. Prince William said he wants his children, George, now 12, Charlotte, now 10, and Louis, now 7, to “grow up surrounded by nature, opportunity and a sense of hope”. “But I also know that unless we act boldly now, that future is at risk,” he says. “The Earthshot Prize is about turning the tide, about proving to our children that we are willing to fight for their tomorrow.” The Prince launched the £50 million initiative with naturalist David Attenborough in October 2020, with the aim of finding 50 solutions to the world’s biggest climate change issues. The first awards ceremony took place the following year and has since taken place in the US, Singapore, and South Africa. A-list celebrities, including Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes, will join the ceremony in Rio this week, alongside the Prince himself. "I feel deeply honoured to be heading to Brazil, a country of extraordinary natural beauty and cultural vibrancy," he told Hello!. "Rio, with its energy, its people, and its iconic landscapes, feels like the perfect place to celebrate the power of environmental innovation." The awards show on November 5 will be hosted by Brazilian broadcaster Luciano Huck, with presenters including sports stars Marcos Evangelista de Morais, the former Brazilian defender; Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula One world champion; and Txai Surui, a leading voice for Brazil's Indigenous communities and the environment. Hello!'s Editor Jessica Callan said: “We are huge supporters of the Prince of Wales and his Earthshot Prize and turning our logo green for the very first time is a symbolic and exciting moment for HELLO! “It reflects our deep commitment to championing sustainability and using our platform to celebrate those who are making a real difference. “The future King's determination to change the world is incredibly inspiring, and we are honoured that he has spoken to HELLO! This issue is about hope, positivity, action and inspiration - values that are at the heart of both The Earthshot Prize and HELLO! itself.”
