Popular Sports Podcaster Reveals Shaved Head, Daughter's Battle with Cancer

David P. Samson took to his popular podcast on Monday and revealed his newly-shaved head while also emotionally revealing that he buzzed off his hair in support of his daughter, who is battling cancer. “When you see a picture of the show today, you will notice that all of my hair is gone from the top of my head,” he said. “I’ve got a rather full beard that has not been shaved or trimmed since Sept. 12. And this weekend I went with other members of my family in support of my daughter, and we all got our heads shaved.” The popular host of the Nothing Personal podcast said he hadn’t spoken in a few weeks about what’s going on in his life before sharing his daughter’s cancer diagnosis. He thanked everyone who has reached out to support him and his family as they navigate this deeply personal matter. Samson, a former front-office executive with the Montreal Expos and former president of the Miami Marlins, praised his daughter as “brave” and “strong” as she undergoes cancer treatment. “The reason why I wanted to do what I did this weekend in solidarity is that we asked her and she indicated that she would enjoy clipping our hair, and she was able to start the process, not finish the process,” said Samson, who added that he didn’t recognize himself after getting rid of his thick mane. Samson, who is prominently featured in Netflix’s most recent sports documentary about the Montreal Expos, said the ordeal has left him feeling a sense of helplessness. “I was thinking about what it means to support somebody, because that’s all I’ve been able to do since Sept. 12, is support my daughter and my family and my other children,” he said. “I’ve been trying to do that. I’ve learned over the past two months, it’ll be two months on Wednesday, when this happened, that my feeling of helplessness is so pervasive that it has overtaken me in a way that it has led me to research so many things.” He went on to say that this cancer has changed the family entirely as they navigate this together.
