Pollensa protest against the planned battery plant

Around a hundred people gathered at noon on Sunday in Pollensa's Plaça Major to demonstrate their opposition to the planned lithium battery storage plant on the outskirts of the town. Among those who took part were former mayor Miquel Àngel March, current deputy mayor Joana Aina Campomar, and the councillor for the environment, Steffy Pozo. Mayor Martí March wasn't in attendance, but he has previously expressed his support for the residents. A statement was read out, defending "the land, health, and quality of life of the community against a project imposed on and far removed from local interests". "Neither Pollensa nor Mallorca are for sale. The territory is not a bargaining chip for interests foreign to the community. The plant doesn't represent progress, but rather risk and imposition." There was a warning of the potential economic and environmental impact on the rural environment and the bay. "The plant will not generate employment on the island, but it could cause the loss of many jobs, such as those of the fishermen of Pollensa or the farmers who sell their local produce." Residents are due to meet town hall representatives on Monday to discuss further action to try and prevent the building of the plant. A petition opposing the plant now has more than 1,500 signatures.
