There is no ignoring the fact that travel habits are changing, people want more diverse activities to enjoy, which in some cases involves maintaining their fitness routines even while on holiday. And while nearly all good hotels provide gyms, swimming pools and spas, there appears to be a growing demand for more professional fitness centres; an increasing number of gyms in Palma are moving into that market. Away from the international franchise fitness centres, which do not have entry flexibility, the private gym sector, which in most cases offers much better facilities, are offering special training packages for tourists in Palma. There are gyms which are offering special day or week entrance passes without having to pay any joining fees and I know of a number of city centre fitness clubs which have enjoyed a boom in the visitor market this summer and hope that it will continue through the winter. Some are even working with hotels who have small gyms in order to cater for the more demanding client. I have witnessed this market grow over the course of this year and bumped into visitors from all over the world working out either before or after a day’s sightseeing and exploring the island. It’s fascinating to see just how long the tourism supply chain can be and new opportunities.
